La pellicola scorre attraverso gli occhi di Woody Watson, timido ragazzo di Baltimora che non ha mai conosciuto suo padre e che vive con la nonna. Anche la madre è assente e passa nella vita di Woody come un lampo, tra i vari ricoveri per tossicodipendenza in una clinica del North Carolina.
